Adventurous Spirit As A Symbol In Up (A Studi Of Semiotics

There are two problems in this research, those are; what the symbols of
adventurous spirit in Up are, and how adventurous spirit as a symbol is reflected in
Up.
In doing the process of this research, the researcher uses semiotic study, based
on Charles Sanders Pierce’s theory to find out the meaning of the symbol.
The data source of this research is Up movie and the object of study are pictures
and dialogues between main character and other characters in Up. In collecting data,
the researcher uses the steps: watching, reading, selecting, writing and arranging
the data. In analyzing data, the researcher uses the steps: identifying, classifying,
and analyzing.
In this research, the researcher finds ten symbols of adventurous spirit, those
are: balloon, goggle, dog, paradise falls, ‘cross your heart’, adventure book, pin,
house, ‘adventure is out there!’, and Kevin. In Up, the meaning of balloon is spirit,
the meaning of goggle is bravery, the meaning of dog is best friend, the meaning of
paradise falls is dream, the meaning of ‘cross your heart’ is promise, the meaning
of adventure book is motivation, the meaning of pin is solidarity, the meaning of
house is memories of Ellie, the meaning of ‘adventure is out there!’ is challenge,
and the meaning of Kevin is hope.
